Vase by Masaharu Hayashi 林雅治

$218.00

A wood-fired, wheel-thrown bottle vase in deep chestnut brown. Days in the wood kiln give the surface its character — glossy, iron-rich bands where the flame licked the shoulder, settling into a dry, stone-like texture below — so no two sides of the piece read quite the same. Quietly sculptural on its own, and just as good holding a single stem.

Masaharu Hayashi 林雅治 (b. 1947, Kyoto) trained under his potter father and the Bizen master Jun Isezaki, a Living National Treasure, before founding FAF — Frontier Art Farm — in 1989 and settling the studio in a former schoolhouse at the foot of Mt. Yōtei in Kutchan, Hokkaido. There he works between sculptural objects and everyday vessels, exhibiting widely across Hokkaido, with a museum solo show of his clay work in 2025.

Height= 8”/ 20.25 cm, Diameter at the bottom= 4.5”/ 11.5 cm
As each piece is formed by hand and wood-fired, color and surface vary piece to piece, and dimensions may vary slightly (±1–2mm).

Care:

  • Hand washing only

  • Not dishwasher safe

  • Not watertight-tested — use a liner for fresh flowers if unsure

  • Not for open flame, oven, or induction cooktops

  • Do not use in the microwave
