Our First Major Remodel

Our first home together was built in 1971 and the aesthetics reflected that time and space.  We knew that we wanted to refresh the key living spaces, but where does one begin?  Maggie had some color and texture schemes in mind and Chris was focused on the functional and architectural constraints (load bearing walls, etc.).  Using Maggie's PINTREST account, we began identifying various examples that met both of our interests.  These initial images formed the basis not just of our first remodeling work, but all future homes and upgrades.

The budget was tight but quality and longevity were (and are) important.  We took our proposed floor plans and fixture designs to a local store where we worked with an in-house designer to choose all the specifics:  materials, textures, colors, spacing, and themes.  These pictures take you through the before, during, and after for the kitchen remodel.

BEFORE:

Dated appliances, low ceiling, formica countertops, and very dark.

DURING:

Complete demo, raise the ceiling, rewire, and replumb

Cabinet installation

Unexpected surprises:  hardwood flooring had to be reassembled, and sections added due to different footprints from the original cabinets.

Flooring refit around the dishwasher space

Backsplash and countertops complete

NEARLY FINISHED:

About 1 month after we thought we were finished in the kitchen, we took an overseas trip.  When we returned, the kitchen ceiling was caving in and there was an inch of water everywhere.  Turns out that one of the water pipes in the ceiling had a very small cut which leaked water during our trip.  It was very discouraging to come home to this mess.  We opened the ceiling, fixed the leak and rebuilt the ceiling.  While this accident was quite severe, it has been our experience that all projects have something unexpected happen.  The key is to stay calm, identify all options for correction, and continue to drive to a solution.

Ceiling collapse due to water leak

Ceiling repaired but not repainted yet

THE FINISHED PRODUCT:

Maggie making dinner in our new (again) kitchen.  Note the beautiful mural wall paper in the dining room (discussed in the last BLOG entry).
