Introducing “The Makers Collection”

Around the world there is a quiet community of makers — architects, carpenters, ceramists, painters; creators of every kind. They work in different materials and different languages, yet share a common devotion to making things well.

At Shiki Hill Studio, our mission has never been only to share our own styles, visions, and solutions. It is also to share the influences we gather along the way — the people and ideas we encounter on our travels. So many makers create beautiful work yet remain, in a sense, geographically anonymous: known intimately in their own corner of the world, and nowhere else.

That is why we've created a new space on our site, The Makers — a page devoted to the artists we have had the privilege to meet and learn from. Here we introduce them in their own right: their stories, their philosophies, and the objects they bring into being.

ErChair

Er Chair in the making

This month, we are honored to introduce Hung Wen-Liang, a furniture designer from Taiwan and a 2026 Red Dot Award recipient for his remarkable Er Chair. Each chair is hand-built — a one-of-a-kind work of art that is, at the same time, deeply functional and ergonomic.

In our many conversations, Mr. Hung has returned again and again to a single conviction: that furniture is meant to be used and loved, not set behind glass. The more we came to know one another, the more we recognized a shared spirit between his work and our own. We each begin with materials that are ecological, sustainable, and built to last. We each make objects meant to be shared, touched, and lived with. And we each hold the same quiet belief — that quality will always outlast quantity. Less is more.

We hope you enjoy coming to know Mr. Hung as we have. Should you have any questions about him or the Er Chair, we would be glad to hear from you.
